Implementation is always the most difficult part of making changes in an organization.  What are some basic steps to help ensure a greater probability of success?

Operational/project implementation plans are critical to executing the organization's strategic priorities.  At the very minimum, they ensure that all the key stakeholders have a common understanding (if not agreement) on the tasks to be done, when and who is responsible.  They enable you to track progress made.  They can also help you to address other implementation challenges such as:

  • Aligning plans with the overall strategy
  • Managing implementation withing the funding available
  • Distinguishing between ongoing operations and special projects
  • Managing risks that are outside of the control of the organization
  • Managing inevitable changes in priorities that can affect the achievement of operational targets
  • Monitoring achievement of the implementation plan on an ongoing long term basis.

The implementation planning guide will help an organization plan and implement improvement initiatives or projects as part of its ongoing continuous improvement.  Key elements include:

  • Prioritize and select improvement initiatives from the list of change opportunities that are currently under consideration or at various stages of implementation

  • Scope the improvement initiatives so that there is a common understanding of what needs to be done and a strong business case

  • Establish the governance structure and assign responsibility for follow up and implementation, including the champions and leads for specific projects

  • Prepare an integrated implementation plan that highlights the critical path, the interrelationships between projects and the overall timeframe

  • Monitor progress and provide implementation support.

The guide (17 pages in Word) identifies key challenges and guiding principles, describes the key elements including scoping and assessing improvement initiatives, and presents a work plan.

You will receive an email with a link to download the implementation planning guide in a fully editable Word format.
